Static In Hair
How To Reduce Static In Your Hair
If you are having problems with static in your hair, there are ways to reduce it. Static happens because the air becomes too dry. This usually occurs when the weather outside goes below freezing and you are forced to use your inside heating system. Your heater is great for heating up the house but it can rob moisture and humidity from your indoor air. The result can be dry skin and hair and you must compensate for this lack of moisture. It can really help to purchase a humidifier for your home during the winter months. But if you cannot afford it, there are other things you can do to help with dry skin and static in your hair.
The first thing you can do is address the dry air in the home. If you live in a climate where you rarely have to use your heater system, you can leave a window slightly open, to let moisture in. You do not have to open it wider than a few inches to get the benefits. But if you live in an area that has a colder climate, fill a large pot with water and set it on the stovetop. Do not use a high setting when you do this. You should use a low setting and do not cover the pot. You will only want the water to be hot enough to steam a bit and this can add humidity into your air. Make sure to frequently add water to the pot and do not leave it unattended. This can also help while you are cooking with your oven. If you are making a dish that has to be roasted for a matter of hours, it can dry out the air considerably. Use the pot and water to counteract the dryness.
If you have heater vents that sit directly on the floor, you can also add moisture to the air. Use a tin can or small metal bowl and fill them with water. Place them on one end of the heater vent and the hot air that is pushed out will heat the water so that it evaporates into the air. This method does not work as well as heating a pot of water on the stove. But it is a perfect choice for people who live in smaller apartments or houses.
Now that you have moisture circulating throughout the house, you can start to relieve the problem with static in your hair. You can start by using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. During the winter months, you will not need a strong shampoo because your hair will not be as dirty. Stick with a mild shampoo and a conditioner that specifically adds moisture to the hair. It will also help to use a conditioning product that stays in the hair. This can be a detangling product or a frizz reducer. They also make static removing sprays that you can apply to your clothes and this will greatly reduce any static in your hair.
Remember to add a fabric softener to your clothes while washing them. This includes bed sheets, curtains and blankets. These things are known to cause static cling and if you do use a spray to reduce it or even a specific hair treatment, you will still have a problem with it. You can use liquid fabric softener or a softening sheet for the drying cycle and this can put a stop to any static problems.
If you fully address each problem when it comes to dryness in the air, you should have no trouble reducing static cling on clothes, furniture and static in your hair.
